Cinephile

By Methystic • Mar 6th, 2009 • Category: Music, The Q10

Glasgow based duo Kenny Inglis & Susan Wallace, formed ‘Cinephile’ back in 2002. With a self indicating ‘sonic manifesto’ they’re now attracting a global fan base. Having achieved an initial burst of notoriety from a music clip in highly acclaimed TV series CSI they have continued to amass a collection of other Film & TV credits.

More importantly the last few years have seen them move from studio to stage and have so far developed a solid reputation on the gig circuit.

Their music has been described as “the soundtrack to a film which doesn’t exist”, the eerie sonic reflection of a visual medium. Their compositions are a means of getting away from just writing music. They are inspired by the thought that their work generates an atmosphere and depth of feeling that instils something beyond visual interpretation, appearing differently to each individual listener.

There fresh new EP ‘Memento’ was released on Monday. The 5 track EP features unreleased material including ‘Memento’, ‘Broken Promise’, and ‘Delicate Times’. It also includes 2 bonus tracks ‘The Passing’ (Scene One), and the full length edit of their recent collaboration with Scottish Ballet’s Jarkko Lehmus on ‘The Daily Bread’.

Available in limited edition CD format, and as a digital download…  you can get your grubby hands on a copy at the Cinephile shop.

UPFRONT had previously spoke to the ethereal duo…

How did you get started?
As cinephile? Through an ad in the local what’s on guide.

What ingredients do you need to mix together to produce the recipe of your sound?
500g Kenny
500g Susie
500g time
a pinch of patience
a ladle of luck
a pot of tea

Did your first gig make you hungry for more?
Oh yes. Probably something to do with the fact that it was in the slam tent at Scotland’s biggest festival, T in the Park, supporting FC Kahuna, Ritchie Hawtin, Green Velvet and Orbital.

What’s the biggest ‘cock up’ to date?
mmm…well, one night a few years back, we were working from the old cottage, someone gave us an mpc to try and we were sketching out some ideas for a live set. We had been working away for around 3 hours and had a good, solid idea on the go. I got up to leave the room and tripped over the cable ripping it out of the back of the mpc. Not good. We managed to salvage a little of what we had and continued to work away. A little while later, I leant over to switch the electric heater off and accidentally switched the mpc switch off! We couldn’t believe it, decided to pack up, go to bed and vowed never to use an mpc again.

What is it that inspires you to make your music/sound?
All the positive energy surrounding it.

What would be the icing on the cake?
Playing live to all our original and new-found MySpace fans around the world. Oh, and a cherry on the top of course.

How will you be remembered?
The band who were ignored by the industry in their own time because they weren’t ‘in fashion’ but who were bloody good.

Describe your music as if it were a fine wine.
Cinephile is a blend of dark tones with magical highs. It is ready to be consumed now, but will stand the test of time. It would pair well with a good independent record label or a mushroom dish. It has a huge intensity on the palette with a finish that lasts forever.

AfterMint!
A wafer thin mint..?

Does your musical style influence your underwear?
Only on a Sunday as far as we’re aware.

Digestive! What do you know about Luxembourg?
It’s very small. We can get cheap flights from here to there. It is squashed between France, Germany and somewhere else…Belgium? It has a music magazine called UPFRONT and a good girl called Deborah.
