Recently Fracture became a two-piece electro-rock project. Joining Ralph Zeimet to tread the music stage boards was Sebastien Laas – formerly of Karma Lounge (L) and guitarist of Cyclorama (L).

Zeimet started on course to electronic production back in 2003 under the name ‘Gosplan’. This humble beginning reflected the minimal influences of Autechre, Aphex Twin and LFO. The ‘Gosplan’ sound was harsh, fuzzy and acid drenched!

A few EP/LP releases later Zeimet took direction with a new course and changed his music persona to ‘Fracture’ (Which is a reference to a track/video clip of British pioneers of shoegaze/electronica – Seefeel).

Airy synths, noisy guitars, off the wall sounds, buried pop melodies and layers of effects are all common ground for ‘Fracture’. The new addition of the guitar from Laas envelope the noisy kraut and indie-rock influences and add an incandescent appeal to their live performances.

Fracture’s, just recently, latest release ‘we dare you, wonder’ is available in all good local outlets or contact the record label. You can check out a review from our good friend Pascal at Disagreement here. UPFRONT Online got Zeimet Q10 responsive!

1. How did you get started?
When I noticed that making music can be far more satisfying than just consuming it passively.

2. What ingredients do you need to mix together to produce the recipe of your sound?
The love to get lost in sonic details and fuzzy guitar sounds, the passion of experimentation through non-verbal musical communication and a big portion of rock n’roll attitude

3. Did your first gig make you hungry for more?
Not really. Playing in front of a bunch of uninterested students was like cooking a pepper t-bone steak for your vegan grandma.

4. What’s the biggest ‘cock up’ to date?
During a live-gig at the Mudam [Museum], a 50-year old visitor of a Hermès-powered video installation approached asking “could you play some Jean-Michel Jarre too?”

5. What is it that inspires you to make your music/sound?
People, social and musical interaction, haunting landscapes, good rock concerts and loops of all kind. I think repetition can transform the ugliest noise into music, even though it might sound rudimental.

6. What would be the icing on the cake?
Playing on the My Bloody Valentine-curated ATP Festival or performing on a dusty underground party in the Casemattes [Luxembourg Historical network of tunnels].

7. How will you be remembered? (what will make you vintage?)
2 guys desperately believing in rock music, with computers. It’s all about willpower and perseverance

8. Describe your music as if it were a fine wine.
I think our music might be like a Porto. Quite strong in taste, not always accessible – but in the right temperature and setting…

9. AfterMint! Does your musical style influence your underwear?
Of course, we just wear pink on stage.

10. Digestive! What keeps you in Luxembourg?
The belief that someday the gigs of local independent bands will attract not only their peers.

Raftside (Filip Markiewicz) was born in 1980. He started his solo career as Raftside at 19, recording his first demo-tape by the age of 20. His first album, a limited edition, was called ‘Antistar’. In 2005 he followed up with a self produced album ‘The Desperate Life of Johnny Sunshine’. In 2007 he released his last LP ‘Opinion Lieder’ which included the single ‘A flower for the mood’. The video for which, directed by Sandy Lorente and Jeff Kieffer, reached number one in the Luxemburgish Planet RTL charts. It was also selected for the Canadian Indie Music Video Festival. www.imvf.com.

He started as a solo performer and shared the stage with the likes of Broken Social Scene, Joseph Arthur, The Wedding Present and The Organ. Nowadays he plays with a three piece band; Antoine Lejeune, Julien Camus and Freddy Museur.

How did you get started?
I went to the Lou Reed show in Differdange in the late 90’s that made me realise that I wanted to do the same job as him. After the gig I had the honour to exchange a few words with him, and he told me that “it’s was really weird to play a show in a sports-hall in Luxembourg but that, that is what makes the job so beautiful…” I guess he was being ironic!

What ingredients do you need to mix together to produce the recipe of your sound?
I think a mixture of champagne & a love affair produce the best sounds from me… (She’ll know herself!)

Did your first gig make you hungry for more?
Oh kind of, yeah… Even though my first gig was definitely terrible for the audience… I had a great moment. After a few years some people told me that they liked my music. So maybe it was a good choice to continue… Honestly, though sometimes I hate being on stage… sometimes I’d just like to be a normal person like you are… just a simple Raftside groupie… (Laughs)

What’s the biggest ‘cock up’ to date?
It was definitely when I opened for Broken Social Scene at the Kulturfabrik in 2003… after my own set, I did a cover of the Pixies’ ‘Where is my mind’ and during the song the whole BSS band came on stage and joined me… that was a real asskicking moment, better than sex! Another story, maybe more funny, was watching Brian Molko totally drunk hitting a taxi cab on rue de Hollerich (Luxembourg Ville) after the Placebo aftershowparty at the Marx (Atelier organisers will certainly remember). I had also asked Mr. Molko to sign the sleeve of my Placebo album; he refused telling me that it would be too “social”… I never understood and thought “what an ass”. Yet, I still like their music.

What is it that inspires you to make your music/sound?
Every human relationship, strange interesting people… love affairs, nightlife experiences, colourful dreams or trips, paintings, desperate youth… love stories that have killed me!

What would be the icing on the cake?
Dunno.. maybe a band like Placebo, after all the hype… having them as an opener for a Raftside gig… I make a promise to Brian that I would join him on stage to do a Pixies cover. I always believed Dylan was right: The times they’re changing..

How will you be remembered? (what will make you vintage?)
As the one who will play a Pixies cover with Brian Molko… (laughs)

Describe your music as if it were a fine wine?
Naked, bloody and deeply in love…

AfterMint! Does your musical style influence your underwear?
I guess my musical style influenced one of my ex-girlfriend’s underwear… every time we met she didn’t wear any…

Digestive! What is about Luxembourg that keeps you here?
I don’t know, it’s really a strange country. I have a love/hate relationship with it, maybe it’s this that makes it exciting and I stay!.

Cico is a Luxembourg born Italian. He studied piano from the age of 6 until he was 11 when he took up jazz guitar. Addicted to all string instruments – violin, harp, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, lapsteel, 12-strings guitars, acoustic-classic-electric&bass guitars – he played his first concert at 14 years old and produced his first album by 17. Spending a couple of years in Anzio he discovered a talent for rap and composing Hip Hop tracks. Back to Luxembourg in 1998 he created 6-Mic Produxion with some friends and also became the charter member for the Luxembourg fraction of the Universal Zulu Nation.

Cico has since been recording, releasing and playing with his various outfits! Earlier in 2008 the Allella Boyz released Allella Time (on Winged Skull). In 2007 Uranami show cased at Popkomm, Berlin. Although for Uranami, it was 2006 when most notably they were invited to play at the Zulu Nation 33 year anniversary one of only a handful of hip hop bands outside of the US ever to be asked. There they chilled with the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Zulu King B Jef and Zulu King Yoda from original CrashCrew who’s quoted as saying “Uranami turned it up! Ya should have been here, the bass was ill, it was a ‘doped’ show! Peace!”

Thanks Cico, much love!

Minipli are a minimalist trio from Luxembourg who formed in the winter of 2006. Drawing inspiration from the far reaches of 20th century pop-rock to contemporary electronic music, Minipli consider themselves as “the lo-fi desperados”. With keyboards, electronics, sparse rock instrumentals it is their own style of extravagant electronic pop. They released their debut album ‘Love Is For The Fishis’ in September 2007 (Read the review from our good friends at Disagreement)

1. How did you get started?
We’ve known each other for many years and decided one day to jam a bit together. We didn’t have any intention to form a band at first. But then when we started to play there was a special kind of magic in the air. We instantly decided that we’d never be apart again and that we were going to make music together for the rest of our lives.

2. What important ingredients do you mix together to produce the recipe of your sound?
Take a big handful of enthusiasm and spontaneity. Mix it together with dilettantism, humour and courage. Let it flow from the belly to the head and there it is!

3. Did your first gig make you hungry for more?
Of course! We had no idea how people would react to our music before our first gig. We were a bit afraid that they would laugh in our faces. But the reactions were very good, so we got the confidence to do ever stranger things.

4. What’s the biggest ‘cock up’ to date?
As far as we can remember we haven’t really “cocked up” musically. We had a gig and we played quite badly because we were drunk; that was a bit embarrassing but not catastrophic. I’m sure such things are still to come. And by the way, all three of us have really huge cocks!

5. What is it that inspires you to make your music/sound?
Everything is inspiration for us. Things we see, things we hear, silly jokes or drunken discussions. Everything in the world can give you ideas.

6. What would be the ‘icing on the cake’?
Hah, to be rich and famous with lots of male and female groupies. But so far, we’re happy. It’s just good to play gigs, to go on tour, to make music together and see what the future is going to bring to us. We’re working hard to get more known.

7. How will you be remembered? (what will make you vintage?)
I guess we’ll be remembered as the guys with the puppets who made strange music. The guys who wore eccentric clothes on stage. As we’re currently developing our musical style into more danceable, rocking-electronic stuff we’ll perhaps be remembered as, “that cool band that started with a really strange debut album.”

8. Describe your music as if it were a fine wine.
We don’t know much about wine. Our music is rather exquisite with exotic ingredients mixed into a spicy cocktail. Sweet and bitter at the same time, with a slice of fresh lemon… and it gets you drunk really fast!

9. AfterMint! Does your musical style influence your underwear?
Yes

10.Digestive! What is it about Luxembourg?
It’s like a bedroom. It’s warm and nice but you have to get out to eat or to take a leak!

Last night The Go-Meees whipped up the salivating frenzy of a hungry PYGmailion crowd in honour of birthday girls Elaine and Marie. The ‘Shake n’ Bake’ ensemble – who’s 15mins of preparation prior to the gig – pulled off an Aunt Bessies classic dish with much self-assurance; thanks to the innate talents of the band members and, undoubtledy, their heavy consumption. The Go-Meees look to have ‘ready to consume-ability’… Who knows when the sell-by-date could be!
